I work as a special education teacher at a low income school in rural western Maine. The shut down of school has truly shown the economic divide between the haves and the have nots. Out of 18 students on my caseload, only 1 family has reliable internet access and a dedicated device that the student can use to access Zoom meetings and online resources. With at home learning, 17 out of my 18 students are left with out not only access to technology, but access to their classmates, access to their teachers, and access to learning. For student's already at a disadvantage, facing challenges in school with learning disabilities, attention deficits and more. When we do have school, they require the most intense interventions to make small progress. With no school for over 6 months, and limited connection to the amazing online resources that are out there, it puts our students already at a disadvantage, at an even further disadvantage. Our district has been out of school sense March 13th! and we are providing packets of work, and other fun activities to all students. Many classroom teachers are going above and beyond, taking advantage of all there is out there in the digital world, and I would love for my students to have the opportunity to experience this as well. In order to get the tablets ready to be used by our kids, we need to equip them with cases, screen protectors and memory chips to enable them for longevity. Up until this point we've had limited technology in our classroom so not only is equipping the tablets going to allow our students to borrow them for access at home, but allow them to be used by countless students in the years to come!
