In our ever growing school, classes are built into the schedule to provide interventions for students who are not meeting grade-level benchmarks. As an intervention teacher, I hope to fill my classroom with activities that promote engagement and a love for learning. Often times, struggling students are even more reluctant to do more reading and math in an intervention class. I hope to build an intervention classroom that is full of learning tools and activities to promote enjoyment and success. A horseshoe table is a classroom tool that supports small group learning. A teacher is able to sit and teach very effectively reaching all learners at their table. Whiteboards are an essential part of learning as students can freely write thoughts, ideas, answers, and math problems using different colors and writing styles. Whiteboards increase engagement! In 5th and 6th grade, students really begin to build on math concepts using fractions and decimals. Many students who have difficulty learning develop fears of fractions and decimals. As an intervention teacher, I hope to reduce that fear by learning through cooperative games and activities. Finally, my students would love a new novel study to participate in. The movie "Wonder" has caught the eye of many as it promotes acceptance, friendships, understanding, and the freedom to be one's own self. Learners can read this book together and have in-depth conversations about the lessons of the story while working on their reading and comprehension skills. The novel study will end with a viewing of the movie:) This project will help enhance the learning experiences for struggling learners in math and reading.
