My students are hungry for anything 21st century! We need 8 Fire HD 8" Tablets in order to be able to run our Sphero BOLTS! We have 25 Spheros in our classroom at the moment and only 5 original iPads to run them. My students: I teach 3 sections of 6th, 3 sections of 7th, and 3 sections of 8th grade. They LOVE their Computers class! Our approach to every lesson in our class is to tie it as close as possible to the real world. Though we are operating around computer science standards, the students are fostering a love of learning as they develop their coding skills. My Project: Though my students can be exposed to coding via the Spheros web-based platform, they are unable to truly test their coding skills without running the Spheros robots. The Spheros robots encourage learning beyond code. To effectively operate the Spheros students must perform basic calculations in math utilizing angles, distance, rate, and time, but it goes beyond that. Spheros are not afraid of water or heights! Now to perform precise movements, the students must take into consideration the resistance of different materials and the effect of gravity. As they code, run, adjust their code, and run the Spheros again, students do not even entertain the idea that they are learning. To them, they are playing and having fun. Having these Fire HD Tablets will give my students the ability to run their Spheros BOLT robots and learn not only the very important 21st century skills of coding, but also very important life skills as well.
