My students are about to begin the final language arts unit of their 8th grade year, "Anne Frank's Legacy." During this quarter, students will also be required to read a novel for their final book project of the year. This project requires them to write an essay about their chosen novel. The purpose of the writing intervention class I teach is to guide these students as they write their book project, but most of them have no idea what to read or where to start with writing the essay. Many of these students have a hard time choosing a book that interests them. If they don't enjoy what they're reading, it will be hard for them to write about it. If they hate writing, it will be difficult for them to improve.
