At our elementary school, a Pre-K through 8th grade school in a turnaround district, we work tirelessly to strengthen our core education. And we have made terrific strides. We now have a cohort of middle schoolers who read at or above grade level and are ready for more challenging coursework. The top scholars in our low-income, under-performing district deserve an outstanding Honors English class, like those found in the most competitive middle schools. We have the scholars, we need the books! Great books for great kids. Classics and modern masterpieces that the kids will love and that will capture their imaginations and generate rich discussions, critical thinking, creative projects and insightful essays. The titles I have selected (along with Shakespeare's Midsummer, which we already have purchased) will form the backbone of the course. The lessons have been planned, the syllabus is prepared, the kids are ready to go - please help place great books into the hands of great kids who have surmounted incredible obstacles to become high-flying students in an under-performing district. Kids who are ready, willing, and able to soar! I promise you, there are no children more deserving of your kindness than my beautiful, dedicated, industrious eighth graders!
