Imagine a class where students have the materials to come in prepared for in depth discussion. In the hopes of making a more rigorous and engaging classroom, students will take these textbooks home and use them to read prior to class so students can come into class and jump into discussing their reading so the large majority of class can be spent diving into primary sources instead of having to take class time taking notes and deepening their background knowledge. When students have tools like a book like this, they will not just be learning how to be AP ready but also college ready! Many students struggle when reaching college level course and are asked to read and outline background information on their own as this is not a normal practice in many schools. My hope is that students will take this AP experience and leave my classroom with not only AP skills but also the study skills that will serve them well in their college careers. This textbook will reinforce key historical thinking skills that students will be developing throughout the year so they can truly become analytical thinkers not just in the classroom but hopefully in their life. The hope is that students will become informed citizens with a clear understanding of the complex history of the United States so they can become citizens who foster positive change. These textbooks will be one more tool that will help me design my class to achieve this goal.
