Due to the fact that the computer lab is heavily used by classes during the school day, extended day and after school, many of the mice and keyboards no longer work. Numerous keyboards are missing keys and students have to press a tiny knob to get these 'keys' to work. The mice are just as broken down and no longer work. There is such a mixed match of broken vs. working keyboards that it is hard for all students accomplish their required curriculum.
As a result, my students waste valuable instructional time trying to get the mouse or keyboard to work. Or they walk around to other computer stations to be able to do their work. We often have to borrow laptops from a cart to be able to accommodate all the students. So, picture students using laptops sitting in front of a desktop in a computer lab because the keyboard or mouse doesn't work. These work stations are rendered useless without any working input devices.
New keyboards and mice will enable my computer lab to become a fully-functional workspace. It would allow all students to take advantage of the 45 minute period and practice their reading or math skills on various e-platforms. I could devote my time to small group instruction and give students having trouble with specific content one to one attention. I could clarify individual math or reading questions. I could give my students that personal attention that they all deserve. I would become a teacher again instead of a technology troubleshooter!
