Today's students require more from teachers and staff than reading and math lessons. For various reasons, more and more children are coming through our doors with loads of stress, fears, worries, uncontrollable impulses and fiery anger. These students have incredible potential, but unfortunately, all that some may see are their 'bad choices' or 'explosive behavior'. It is my responsibility and pleasure to work with these students and their teachers to bridge that gap, reduce problem behavior, and thus increase their ability to cope with daily obstacles. Once this process begins to take place, academics can begin to progress and relationships will flourish!
Kids need time away from the classroom to work through these problematic situations, explore their feelings, and learn specific social and emotional skills.
The materials for this project will help create just that space. A clean and neat environment that is not overloaded with colors and visual distractions is necessary. A room that is comfortable and soothing to their overactive stress response systems will set the stage for healthy conversations and purposeful skill training.
