On the first day of my class, most of my students claimed to "not like reading." I teach a basic skills literacy course, in which I help students refine many essential skills, which will boost both their reading comprehension and writing abilities. Upon most of my students telling me that they did not like reading, I decided to make it my mission to change that--I wanted to make my students readers, and not just readers who read books for school, but readers who truly get lost in a novel, watch characters come to life, and find something transferable and meaningful in the books that they read. I have collected and inherited many high interest books to include in my classroom library, so that students can explore their reading interests. Along with high interest books, I want my students to be comfortable and to feel like real life readers. When does anyone do pleasure reading in a stuffy, inflexible desk? I know that when I find a great book, I devour it in the comfort of my cozy couch, with pillows and blankets all around me. My students, who find reading as a challenge to begin with, need to explore the wonders of reading in comfort. I truly think flexible seating will give them the opportunity to lose themselves in the utter joy that books can bring.
