I am a K-5 visual arts teacher in an urban elementary school. When you walk into my art classroom, everyone is an artist. I want my students to see like artists, think like artists, and ultimately feel like artists. Everyone will succeed. My school is made up of a diverse population. Each student comes to the art room with different needs. In my school, we believe that recognizing and honoring diversity strengthens our ability to teach the whole child and build a sense of community. My students are hard-working, creative, imaginative thinkers. During the week, about 750 students create art within my classroom. Their faces light up when using materials they may not have access to anywhere else but the art room. It is my job to allow them to express their ideas and creativity through art each week of the school year. I am hoping to continue providing students with new and exciting materials to create and learn with.
