The books that I am requesting are meant to be in the hands of my students. If not for my first graders this year, than for all those in the years to come. It is important not only for my students to have books that they can see themselves in, but also as windows that so they can see into other cultures. It is crucial in today’s world to be comfortable with people from diverse backgrounds. The books on my list will do that. I have many Hmong students that will love to read The Story of Dog and Wolf. I can’t wait to read the books of accomplishments like Brave Ballerina: The Story of Janet Collins that few know about. Lastly I look forward to seeing my students make connections to themselves and each other while reading this fabulous books.
