My students love to look at picture books but have reached a point where they are more interested in being able to read the words and tell the story! Having books that interest them and that they can actually practice their reading skills with will help greatly. We practice the most basic foundation of comprehension by learning to retell the stories we read. In the beginning, they learn to retell what is read to them but as they progress with their skills, they learn the importance of not just reading the words on the page but thinking about what they reading, too. Leveled readers allow my kids to be in a position to recognize the sight words we know, while also being able to sound out unfamiliar simple words. Having books with not only a variety of levels but also topics will keep my students' interest as they learn.
