The GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) PRIDE group at my school works very hard to create a kind and accepting place for ALL students. Navigating high school can be difficult for many students in a semi rural small school, leaving some students feeling ostracized and alone. The GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) PRIDE group at my school works very hard to create a kind and accepting place for ALL students. From posting positive messages on lockers, providing lunch options outside the cafeteria, to hosting a spring picnic and ‘dateless’ dance, our meetings and activities are not limited to LGBTQ students and their allies but are open to all students. Students spent a lot of time brainstorming ways to reach students and determined that social media and clothing/buttons work. The group has created a YouTube station and post videos. Students have been researching button makers. The group plans to print positive messages and hand them out to students prior to and at our various events for promotion and inspiration. The messages are not specific to our LGBTQ students, focusing on kindness, acceptance, diversity and safety. Students also plan to make buttons for other groups upon request to expand and make connections with other school clubs. The GSA PRIDE group isn’t naïve and does not believe that their buttons will solve all the school’s problems, but as many of them have said, just an unexpected smile from someone or a positive word/ acknowledgement could change the day for someone in need. By donating to Kindness: It’s Only a Button Away, you will give GSA PRIDE students another way to spread their positive messages to students. They believe, as do I, that small acts of kindness and acknowledgment of marginalized students will make a positive impact.
