My school has strong Performing Arts and Multi-media academies. Our enrollment is populated with creative unique students. I am routinely enthralled by our talented youth. However sometimes great creativity in one area is accompanied by a real weakness in others. I first meet my Algebra students as 9th graders. By this time, they have taken Algebra or Pre-Algebra for 2 years. My statistics show 34% of these students failed math last year. These are wonderful creative kids but they are struggling math students. Last year I received a SmartBoard with Math Tools. I was elated. I went home and built lessons embedding sound and video and the wonderful new Math Tools. I went to school and disaster struck. Many audio clips wouldn't play and forget about the videos. When I attempted to use the Math Tools the computer crashed. I checked the specs of my 8 year old computer and discovered that everything was woefully inadequate.
