Many students have the opportunity to attend schools where they are given an electronic device such as a laptop or tablet to use for school purposes. Unfortunately, my school doesn't have the funds to do this. This puts my high school seniors at a disadvantage compared to other students. They have less familiarity with important programs that they need to be successful in college and beyond. My students will use their laptops as tools of civic engagement. Not only will we use them for research and daily assignments, students will be tracking the 2020 presidential election and writing letters to representatives about issues that are important to them. Having a printer in class will make it easier to print the letters that students would want to send their representatives. Through our daily use of the laptops, I will teach students important tech and media literacy skills that will prepare them to be educated participatory citizens.
