My high school students are blossoming scientists, and many aspire to pursue a STEM-related career. My role as their teacher is to foster their curiosity and prepare them for their future. One way I do this is to give students opportunities to use modern biotechnology techniques and equipment to investigate questions involving DNA. Our world is constantly changing and our ability to learn about ourselves and other organisms involves our ability to understand and manipulate DNA. Almost all biology-related careers use these techniques, including forensics, wildlife conservation, medicine, pharmacology, ecology and environmental science.
The microcentrifuges that I am requesting will allow my students to process DNA samples properly and, therefore, ensure more reliable experimental results. Many of the investigations using DNA require spinning DNA samples at a high velocity to separate out the different components in the sample. The only way to do this is with a microcentrifuge.
Students that have graduated have contacted me to thank me for exposing them to the various techniques that they are now using in their college laboratories. They frequently mention how knowledgeable and confident they feel. This feedback from my former students helps to confirm that what I am doing in the class is helping to prepare them for their future.
