Adverse Childhood Experiences are common among the students here. Without the instinct of how to speak clearly to others, these students are in an extremely isolated place within their community. Poverty and drug addicts are seen at the grocery store, fast food areas, and on their way to school. Coping skills are important as they may not be learning them at home. The Hoquiam school district is a tight knit community of motivated staff and educators who care deeply for the welfare of these students. When these students go to school, it is a second family to many. They are sent home with a few meals for the weekend, clothes donations for job interviews are collected at the high school, and the love that is felt can't help but touch your soul. This being my first year in this district, to see the children with speech issues become depressed, lack confidence, and develop unhealthy behaviors as the only coping skills they know how to use is a tragedy. Through breathing techniques, affirmations, and a growth mindset we work together to try and change the students psyche. The supplies in this donors choose basket will help students aged 10-18 develop their voices in a safe space. I want them to know that Kuleana (the Hawaiian word for responsibility) is not negative. Taking mana (power) in themselves will be a freeing experience. And this begins with the ability to believe that each of them has a voice that matters. Thank you for reading about these students who have perseverance and grit.
