S.P.I.R.E. is a program that our school has used for many years to help students build early phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Students progress through a multisensory phonics program in a small group with explicit instruction with a reading specialist. Student understanding is checked through a "quick check" at the end of each lesson to ensure they have mastered the skill before progressing to a more difficult skill. Funding is questionable for this year, and we are unsure if we will be able to continue to provide this program to our students that we know has been so successful in helping our students learn to read in past years. Funding this project will ensure that these students (66% of whom are socioeconomically disadvantaged) will continue to receive reading support with SPIRE workbooks to help them become successful readers despite their challenges. Our area was devastated this past year by Hurricane Florence. Many of our students homes were damaged or destroyed. In addition, many of our schools were damaged and student populations were shifted so funding for the upcoming school year is uncertain.
