As a literacy specialist, I have a great responsibility in front of me each day - to help children make amazing gains in the area of reading and writing. In my classroom, each students’ instruction is individualized based on their immediate needs and both short- and long-term goals. I am working hard to create a more student-led atmosphere because it has become clear to me that students retain more and have a deeper investment in their learning when they are the center of it. However, my classroom is very small, since I only work with 6-8 students at a time. Regular school-issue furniture does not allow optimal learning, flexibility, and collaboration to happen as organically as it can with flexible tables and seating.
