Our students are exposed to canonized literature like Shakespeare each year. But to really have students be prepared to participate in today's global society, we want them to have access to as much diversity of literature as possible. Broadening the variety of books we can offer our students will allow us to have more of them be engaged with the class and their reading. When students have a choice in what they read they'll be able to pick something that interests them. Interest increases engagement, and engagement is what drives meaningful learning. Our students love to work together and talk about their ideas, so these books will support our goal of having students regularly reading in a book club-like environment and discussing topics that are current and relevant to their lives.
