As adolescents growing up in a low-income urban community, our students face many challenges. In addition to facing the challenges of adolescence itself (Who am I? Where do I belong? What is my role?), students are faced with making choices that could significantly impact their future. This is a critical time for students to make right choices such as not giving in to crime, drugs, and other issues that many see in their neighborhood. Our school’s annual 6th grade camp trip provides students with a significant life experience by teaching them about both environmental and character education. The camp stresses character building and uses outdoor education as a way to teach adolescents about making the right decisions for themselves.
