Children need to know that reading can be exciting and engaging rather than dull and boring; the few graphic novels that I currently have in my classroom are constantly going through student's hands, and they can not get enough of them. Struggling readers will often pick up a graphic novel because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book. Students who read these graphic novels find reading engaging and begin to read more for enjoyment! Helping students begin to learn that reading is fun is a perfect way to build better readers. Graphic novels are a gateway to better reading skills for reluctant readers. There is a Chinese Proverb that states, "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." My students need as many engaging books as they can get so that they can learn that the more they read, the more they learn and understand.
