Students will learn painting techniques while researching an issue pertaining to a specific area in the ocean. Wash-wet, sponging, salt resist, cement resist, blooming, and lifting are a few of the painting techniques students will apply to depict their ecological issue. Research a marine ecological issue and bring it to life in watercolor! Students will have a deeper understanding of what exactly the ecological issue is, its causes, effects on the marine environment, why we should care about this issue and what can be done to prevent progression of the problem. A final component requires a call to action - what can the student do to prevent the progression of the problem or remove the problem. The students will need the requested material to illustrate their ecological issue in a detailed watercolor painting, thus making interdisciplinary connections. The variety of requested supplies will make the learning more meaningful and enable students to learn and apply a variety of techniques on a single composition, including sketching lightly, using proper order of operations, applying plenty of detail and effectively depicting an issue visually.
