Morningside Mustangs Garden Club is going to learn how to grow vegetables from seed this year and the basics of urban farming. Community Urban Farming is the future of our food supply and could be the answer to the problem of food deserts in our low-income communities. Many of my students lack access to healthy vegetables and other fresh foods in the community due to a lack of grocery stores; I want to help remedy this problem by teaching my students how to grow their own produce. We will use the greenhouse, heat mats, and peat pots to start our seeds inside during cooler weather before moving them outdoors. We will learn about composting scraps to reduce waste, and use it to fertilize our soil. I hope that we will be able to send our fresh produce home with our garden club members.
