By providing books for these students, they will be able to read and discuss the same book at the same time. In the past, we have had to share 2-3 copies of a book because the cost of buying one for everyone was prohibitive. Now we can have lively discussions about the literature that these teens chose themselves. They will be working on not only their literary skills but also communication and social skills as we meet every other week to talk about the current book. The students also work on their writing skills by collaborating to write book reviews for the school newspaper each time they read a book.
By reading books outside of a regular classroom setting, students will have the opportunity to explore themes not usually explored in the traditional classroom. The young ladies in the group have expressed strongly their desire to read more books with female protagonists so they are especially excited about some of their choices.
Although we would be very excited to receive all of the books we have requested, as this would provide us with enough books for the entire year, the students would also be very grateful for even partial fulfillment of our project. The joy for reading that these students show is a testament to the bright future that we can expect for our world and is both inspiring and infectious!
