Often students misbehave because they are lacking the necessary skills to be successful in the classroom. My students read books every day while they sit in their cells. Through reading, students are actively engaged in and outside of the classroom while they are detained. Reading helps to increase vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. If these skills are increased while students are detained, they will gain and improve skills needed outside of our facility in the real world. Reading is something my students do every day whether they realize or not; therefore, adding a variety of new books to the classroom library will help the students increase vocabulary and their overall schema through reading while in detention. Most people refer to our students population as “At risk”. We want to show them and the community that they are “Kids at Hope”. I believe that everyone deserves a second chance and we hope to send more students off to college, so they can become a productive member of society.
