Students will use the building supplies to build several different building models that meet STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering Arts, and Mathematics) challenges throughout the year. For example, students will construct boats to save survivors after 9/11, construct a lean-to to protect Shiloh, construct a pulpit for MLK, Jr. that can be transportable. Students will have to problem-solve when an unexpected turn occurs, create and adhere to a budget, and provide a report detailing the building process. Ultimately, it is a real-world example of how architecture is produced using actual STEAM concepts and becomes the most memorable projects. Funds for this project will change my students' lives in concrete ways. First, many of my students cannot afford materials. Several often take extra school lunches home for the weekend, so the possibility of them bringing in their own supplies is out of the question. Second, constructing requires lots of real-world skills that cannot simply be taught from a textbook or studied for an upcoming quiz. The pride they feel in their finished product is satisfaction from learning these skills.
