The students I work with struggle with basic number sense. It saddens me to watch my 4th graders using their fingers to add 5 and 8 because it conveys to me that they are lacking some of the most basics math skills necessary for success. Rekenreks are a great hands-on, visual model that can be used to help develop the number sense these students are missing. Although Rekenreks are designed for lower elementary students, they will be a great math tool to support and develop the number sense that so many students are missing. Students can use the Renkenreks to develop computation skills or solve contextual problems by finding and using patterns and relationships in numbers. The color of the beads changes after 5 beads so that kids can subitize more easily and relate quantities to the benchmarks of 5 and 10. Rekenreks help students develop more advanced strategies by building number sense. Number sense develops as students have experiences with numbers, and they build relationships about numbers. My students really want to learn and are always excited when they enter my room. Rekenreks will be another tool to help them reach their goals.
