My students live in neighborhoods surrounded by gangs and poverty. The beginning of this school year especially was hard for them, because many of my students faced personal losses in their families and their communities. Yet they come to school each day, eager to learn and fighting for their future. This is a testament to my students' enduring spirits and their resilient natures, and exposing them to characters who experience the same will encourage a critical view of their own lives and urge them to make connections to texts and their world.
