I would love my students to experience the nonfiction account of Ernest Shackleton and his men's extraordinary expedition to Antarctica. The expedition was a failure; they never reached Antarctica. But the story is a rare and shining example of true leadership, survival, perseverance, and tremendous bravery. Not only will my students learn the qualities of real leaders, but they will learn more about the history of exploration and hopefully learn to love the genre of nonfiction. My students will not only read this account but they will write journals from the perspective of the men on the expedition. Students will also research Arctic explorations and the perils and unique sea life of the Southern Ocean. Finally, we will create our criteria for effective leadership.
