During the summer months, many of my students do not have access to books at their reading level. This puts low-income students at a severe disadvantage for school success. According to the National Summer Learning Association, low-income students lose two to three months in reading achievement over the summer, while their higher-income peers tend to make slight gains. By the fifth grade, cumulative years of summer learning loss can leave low-income students up to three years behind their peers. Through this program, all kindergarten, first and second graders will "shop" for FIVE brand new books to keep and read over the summer. The goal of this project is to help families create a small library for their child and build on the hard work done during the school year. Ultimately, we want to prevent summer reading loss.
