My students need materials to create a coffee shop to supply our teachers with coffee in the mornings and teach our students essential life skills like counting money! Students in the special education classroom are not only working on academics but life skills to prepared them for real life situations such as; counting money, following directions, sequencing, and communicating. To support these skills and more we would like to start a coffee shop. Most students are not only working on academic skills but social skills. It is important for these students to generalize what they learn in the school environment to real world situations. It is a focus to prepare our students to be functional citizens in the community. Engaging in activities that are true to real life situations can only better support the students transitions into middle school, high school, and adulthood. Students will use the materials to create their own coffee shop! They will be selling coffee to the staff members at our school. Students will independently fill orders by using these materials and delivering them to the staff members. Students will learn skills such as; following directions, sequencing, counting money, communicating appropriately, navigating around a building independently, being cautious, working together, completing a task, etc. Delivering the coffee will give our students the chance to be part of the school and get to know all the staff around the building. It will give them a project that will help them feel successful. This project will support students not only educationally through teaching them academic skills but it will also teach them life skills that they can take with them forever. We are making learning fun and giving these students and teachers an experience they will never forget!
