As a school counselor, providing an environment where self reflection, mindfulness, and sincerity will occur is key. I have chosen a variety of books, sensory/calming items, and therapeutic games to help students express their emotions and feelings. I want students to feel welcomed and safe when they enter my office. I want to create an environment that allows for everyone to have an outlet. The Next Place by Warren Hansen was a book that was chosen to give to students suffering grief and loss. I have given this book out many times before and it really helps comfort students and families. I have also chosen "stress balls" to be given to students in need of something to take home and help them when they are going through a stressful time. The books will be used for classroom lessons and counseling groups and the games will be utilized for counseling groups specifically. This projects targets the following Nevada Academic Content Standards (Health: grades K-2 and 3-5) 1.5.13 Explain a person’s right to feel comfortable and safe (a) Recognize safe personal space of self and others. (b) Understand the importance of not violating people's safe personal space. 2.5.1 Identify how various sources affect thoughts, feelings and health behaviors. 4.5.5 Demonstrate non-violent strategies to manage or resolve conflict. 4.5.7 Describe ways to safely respond when someone is being bullied or made to feel unsafe. 5.5.1 Apply a healthy choice when making personal decisions. 8.5.3 Differentiate between bystander and up stander behavior. 1.2.3 Identify and respect various physical, emotional, and intellectual differences.
