My students are a bright and enthusiastic group of diverse learners from low-income families. Half of the students are Spanish speakers, and half are English speakers, but they all come together in our classroom in Spanish immersion to become bilingual, bi-literate and bicultural. Our school is located in a high crime, low-income urban location, where the challenges of poverty, violence and racism are a very real experience for our students and families. School is a safe place, where students not only see their own language and culture honored and celebrated, but also engage in hands-on learning opportunities through Expeditionary Learning. Teachers here are dedicated and hard-working, designing our own curriculum that meets Common Core standards and helps at-risk youth find connections and meaning through highly engaging content and relevant explorations. Offering this kind of education is a challenge in a financially strapped urban district, which is why your support is so vital!
