We attend one of the lowest performing schools in Washington, D.C. All my students have special needs stemming from gestational to parental neglect. They have endured years of being "pushed through the system" with little expectation of success. Most have never left their neighborhood and have no idea what opportunities there are outside their comfort zone. Some believe that their education is not a priority, and when you delve deeper into their lives you start to understand why they feel the way they do. The facility we are in is great, however technologically we are lacking. Last year we had class sizes ranging from 36 to 41 students per class. Saying we were over crowded would be an understatement. The school began to feel more like a baby sitting service than an educational facility. We have since improved slightly. This year we are honing in on behavioral setbacks and nutrition in an attempt to foster education. It is a good first step, and the students can see it.
