It seems that school districts all over the nation are constantly fighting for the arts and music is always the first on the chopping block. Why? Because once students head into middle and high school the band, orchestra, and chorus numbers continue to decrease. It's my job as an elementary music educator to instill the love of music, exploration, and learning into my students so that they continue to sing, play instruments, and have fun during their secondary education. Ukuleles are a very easy string instrument to play considering they only have 4 strings and are small enough for tiny (and big!) hands. It's so simple to play a familiar melody or even the chords to your favorite song in just ONE lesson on the ukulele. By teaching and playing the ukulele I hope to encourage my students to continue playing instruments in the band, orchestra, or even private lessons well beyond their elementary school years.
