Integrating technology in our everyday activities will raise student engagement and create more meaningful learning opportunities. Due to our the diverse learning needs of these five children, differentiating by instruction style, content, and interest can be a daunting task. However, iPads would be instrumental in helping us meet individual student needs. Students can be assigned different tasks on the iPads, they can move through activities at their own pace- (repeating sections if needed or fast forwarding to next steps), and they can have activities structured specifically for their learning styles and needs. For example, one student may access a reading passage, using web 2.0 tools on the iPad to highlight unknown words, while another students uses his or her iPad with headphones to hear a read-aloud version of the same reading passage. Another student at a higher reading level may access a completely different reading passage, and may use his or her iPad to record their voice as they retell main idea, characters, and setting. Teacher-created podcasts can be shared with students to review content or provide instructions for independent work. Product creation apps can allow students to demonstrate their understanding of content through more authentic projects. Twenty-first century skills can empower these young students to accomplish tasks they weren't able to accomplish before. For example, one of the students has difficulty with verbal expression, but can express himself very well through drawings and basic text. An app like Doodlebuddy or Popplet would allow this student to excel through non-verbal communication. Technology has the ability to give confidence, success, and a voice to those who don't naturally have it. When used effectively, it has the ability to empower even our youngest students, with a variety of learning needs.
