In our Spanish classroom, reading is the norm. It is one of the most effective ways to acquire language. We read daily in my classroom, be it through storytelling, through our class' study of a novel, or through Free Choice Reading. By supporting our Free Choice Reading Library, you will be giving students a wider array of books to choose from, increasing their engagement, and improving their proficiency by keeping our class comprehensible. Free Choice Reading allows students to choose a novel that interests them. By choosing something that is interesting to them, students are more engaged and acquire vocab more quickly. They are also able to take a peek into different cultures that we may not get a chance to study as a class. I have my students for 2-3 semesters in a row, and many of them have read most of the books that are in my library. I am seeking to add more books for them, and to start a library for my heritage speakers (my students who already speak and read Spanish). I have seen how Free Choice Reading helps students rediscover the joy of reading for pleasure. By the end of the semester, many students are so engrossed in their story that they forget that it is in a different language!
