We spend a great deal of time learning on the rug, sharing stories, and playing games. We meet every morning and end every day on the rug. New ideas are shared on the rug. Things begin to click on the rug. This is the main part of the classroom where my students and I can gather to be a family. Having a rug large enough for each of my students to sit comfortably would make the world of difference in 1st grade. It would not only allow for each student to have their own learning space, but it would enhance community in the classroom by being a place of inclusion. Having an ABC rug would give my students a comfortable place to gather as a family, go on academic adventures and grow their brains. The rug will also allow for learning through movement as we will use the letters around the rug to practice letter sounds and make words. There are endless activities this classroom rug could help accomplish.
