Because I practice a living curriculum within my classroom, I always give students the freedom to exercise their agency in their education. As we approach an opportunity for book clubs in our informational text unit, students have expressed interest and excitement in reading contemporary Young Adult novels that tackle real-world issues in a narrative context. For many students, these novels reflect their daily lived experience, providing them with relatable protagonists, settings, and conflicts. Through this, students are able to experience the magic of reading in authentic and meaningful ways. Studies have shown over and over that students succeed in a classroom environment that recognizes their needs and interests and meets them where they are. Won't you help me provide them with their choice texts?
