Flexible seating in the classroom is a great way to give students choice. Students learn best when they have some control over their environment. With flexible seating, students are allowed to choose where they sit and often times with whom they sit with, but also gives them the opportunity to move their seat or location as needed. Flexible seating allows students to fidget and wiggle as needed, which will allow for less disruption and more engagement. Students who are uncomfortable tend to become distracted and unproductive. With flexible seating, they are able to find comfortable positions allowing them to become more calm, focused, and productive. Many flexible seating options also lend themselves to sense of touch for students, which can increase students' focus and information processing. Lastly, I think students learn better when they have the ability to collaborate. Traditional desks isolate students or, at best, confine them to the same locations and the same seat partners. Flexible seating will help break up this isolation allowing students to work collaboratively in pairs, small groups, and even whole class.
