Each day in my classroom, my students meet in a "Community Circle." In our first classroom meeting back in August, I prompted my students to make a circle on the perimeter of the carpet. We quickly figured out we didn't fit.
Even still, my students love to "Squircle Up." Every day they squeeze into a squircle around the rug so that we can share and play games and build our community together. Community Circle has allowed us to learn new things about one another, to laugh, and to solve problems cooperatively. But, it's hard to feel like part of the community when you've been pushed to the outside of the circle. This carpet would ensure that each of my students have a place in our community circle; that no one is excluded for lack of space.
Further, this carpet would allow my students the space to sit next to their partners during instruction, while maintaining their personal space. Currently, my students squeeze into our meeting space wherever they find room. They're often uncomfortable, which takes away from their learning. The situation on our carpet is likened to having the middle seat on an airplane. Unpleasant. A new carpet would give my students the space they need to do their best learning.
