This year we have been reading about real-life people who have demonstrated positive character, growth mindset and high achievement. Each morning we start our day learning about a new person in history or in current times who has accomplished success by overcoming barriers. After hearing about this person, the class chooses three character trait words that describe the individual and give supporting reasons and evidence. Together, we choose one of those words to best describe the person and then place their picture on the wall-of-fame under that word. Students show excitement daily by asking, "Who is our person today?" or "Can we learn about ______ tomorrow?".
The resources in this project will support this classroom routine of developing growth mindset and social responsiveness. These are beautifully written and illustrated books that will enhance this learning. The next step in this routine is for students to reflect on their actions and mindsets and to model after those we've learned about. The students will be able to complete this statement: Because ________________, I ________________. For example, "Because Michael Jordan didn't give up on his dreams, I won't give up on mine!" 2nd grade is a pivotal year in development. What they learn about being good citizens will stay with them throughout their lives.
