When a student plays a drum, it fires up their brain...literally. Studies have shown that when a student engages in music, the process uses every area of the brain and helps students to become multitaskers. Speaking rhythms by reading them and playing them to each other encourages students to better understand the art of language. Music is a language...it has questions and answers; it has symbols that communicate; and when you hear it, it provokes a desire to respond in some sort of way. My students truly enjoy communicating to and with each other by reading and playing rhythms on the big tubano drums in a drum circle. The problem is that we do not have enough of the tubano drums for every one to have their own to play, so some students may feel left out at times, because they had to wait for the next turn. In addition, it makes the lesson plan longer, which means we may not get to the point that I would like them to have achieved in that lesson. By donating to our project, you will be granting the opportunity for every student to have a chance to play on a drum and to be free to partake in every rhythmic conversation. Students will feel more successful and accomplished. All students will be more focused and ready to speak the language of music!
