Often times, high school students are not exposed to the same unique strategies that elementary students are. My students are still growing and learning about themselves, especially how they learn. Flexible seating provides students with a variety of options to experiment with their learning. Flexible seating also allows students to build trust, communication and respect within the classroom with their peers and the teacher. By allowing students to choose how they want to learn, they can grow in a relaxing and supportive environment. Once students become in tune with themselves, they can grow and succeed beyond the classroom. Flexible seating will also help to differentiate small groups and create a more dynamic classroom for reteaching and working one-on-one with students who need more support. Not only do I have students who want to feel like they are young adults, I also have students with disabilities and learning needs that can be supported by a comfortable environment where they feel that they can be themselves without reservation or fear of judgement. Even my students who have more energy than most find that bouncing or moving around while sitting provides more focus for assignments and peer discussions.
