One issue our students face is the lack of exposure to places and events. This often becomes a problem when faced with terms on high stakes test questions that are written with the assumption that students fully grasp the meaning. The virtual reality headsets will be mainly used to enhance social studies lessons and to provide perspective and frame of reference for places and events in history. We find that it is important for our students to be able to connect with the content and often struggle with ways to help them find meaning in what they are learning. Since absenteeism is an issue with alternative students, when they are at school, we have to make learning count! Textbooks and video clips are great; yet, the up close and personal experience that VR headsets provide will take our students to another level of learning, which provides the motivation needed to keep our students in school. Students will experience learning first hand and will have opportunities to write, to reflect, to debate, and to analyze content in a way that they have not been able to do before.
