These books will show my students that the things they value matter, that they can bring their whole selves—yes, even the parts that love videogames and manga and Dungeons & Dragons—to school. As a librarian, it's so important to me that the library reflects the needs and interests of my students. Bringing in books on Minecraft and Kirby and My Hero Academia gives students a way into reading. And that's so important; students too often say that they're not readers. But I've often found that what they mean by that is that there aren't books in the library that reflect who they are and what they like. A book about Pokemon is still a book. Graphic novels and manga are reading. If we want kids to read and to get better at reading and to love reading, we need to have books they want to read on our shelves.
