Students in elementary school classrooms are often required to sit still in traditional desks for long periods of time. This can be difficult for all children, let alone children in an integrated classroom with special needs and the need for movement! Often traditional desks make students feel confined and tense, thus causing them to act out in order to get their needs met in another way. We would like to incorporate bicycle desks in our classroom, to keep students' bodies moving, and brains thinking in a productive way. Students will not feel the need to get up as often and wander. In addition, they will be getting exercise! With a nationwide obesity problem in our country, especially for youth who may not have the chance to always get outside to play, or spend a lot of their free time playing video games, this is extremely beneficial. By having these bicycles in the classroom not only can we incorporate the physical movement but we can address STEM activities in an interactive way. Students can use their engineering and reading skills to assist in the assembly of the bikes. We can incorporate technology by having students use the Clear Touch Interactive Panel to make graphs of miles travelled, revolutions per minute and heart rates before and after exercising. Our energetic and inquisitive students crave opportunities for hands on learning and movement.
