Many of my students struggle with learning to read because they just don’t see themselves as readers. We often focus on a growth mindset; encouraging students in a positive way to think of themselves as capable and smart. Graphic novels are special because they have the look and feel of a “grown up” book with all the short sentences and beautiful graphic art that make it readable and enjoyable to young readers. When students find a book they love, they often become invested in that author and in a book series. Students feel like more accomplished readers and so their love of reading, and therefore their love of knowledge blossoms!
