The students in my art classroom have enjoyed spending this year learning about how art and culture have interacted throughout history, but due to a lack of materials, we have not yet studied fiber arts. Fiber arts are present in every culture, and are a way humans across the world bring beauty and imagination into their daily lives. I know that my students who are drawn to the designing and building forms of making will especially shine when given the chance to design patterns and turn those into personalized products they can be proud of! Last fall, I was able to do a simple weaving project with 4th and 5th grade. They loved the creativity and the process. Fiber arts give unique opportunities to practice mindfulness while creating, an important skill for these students, many of whom have trauma backgrounds. To give all my ages of students opportunities for these types of learning experiences, I need to refresh my fiber arts supplies.
